About Pleasant Point (Sipayik)

The Passamaquoddy people have lived in their ancestral homeland for thousands of years. The region is known for its diverse and abundant fish population, which has allowed them to develop a vibrant Indigenous economy. Pleasant Point peninsula, also known as Sipayik, is a unique location for fishing, with quick access to inland and ocean waterways, a safe harbor, and abundant marine resources. Over the past 400 years, the Passamaquoddy people have had to adapt to the encroachment and degradation of resources in their homeland. Today, there are over 3,000 Passamaquoddy citizens living in three self-governing communities. Two communities are in Maine, and the third is in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Although geographically separated, the people maintain close ties.
